Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common skin cancer. UV radiation is a common cause of squamous cell skin cancer. Typically these lesions will present in areas of chronic sun exposure such as the face, ears, neck, and arms. Clinically it can present as a red, scaly, ulcerated, and elevated skin lesion. They often will bleed with minor trauma and will not heal on their own. Years of sun exposure lead to DNA damage in the skin cells and eventual tumor formation.

Squamous cell carcinoma in situ is a very superficial type of squamous cell. In situ refers to the superficial nature of the lesion. Clinically it presents as a flat or slightly elevated red scaly or crusted plaque. By definition it is non-invasive and is the best time to have it treated. If left untreated it will continue to grow and eventually become invasive.

Invasive squamous cell carcinoma as the name implies is invasive. The cancer cells have gone beyond the top layer of the skin and are invading the deeper layers of skin tissue. These tumors are at higher risk for spreading to other parts of your body. Clinically it presents as a red, scaly, crusted elevated bump or plaque on the skin.
